West Africa, also known as Western Africa, refers to the region of Africa that lies to the west of the continent. This region is also commonly referred to as the Sub-Saharan region, which comprises countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Mali, and Sierra Leone, among others. While West Africa is the commonly used term to describe this region, other synonyms include the Guinea region, the Sudanic region, and the Lusophone region. The Guinea region comes from the Gulf of Guinea that lies to the west of the continent, while the Sudanic region is derived from the term used to describe the grassland savanna that runs from Senegal to Sudan. Lastly, the Lusophone region refers to the countries where Portuguese is spoken, such as Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde.
