Wood laurel, commonly known as mountain laurel, is a flowering plant that belongs to the family Ericaceae. It is a broadleaf evergreen shrub that grows up to 20 feet tall and is native to the eastern United States. It is also popularly known as ivy bush, calico bush, spoonwood, and rose bay. These synonyms are derived from the plant's various features such as the shape of its leaves and flowers. Ivy bush and calico bush come from its ivy-like foliage and varied colored flowers. Spoonwood is derived from its hard, dense wood that was once used to make spoons. Lastly, rose bay comes from its pink to white, rose-like flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer.
