Zalophus californianus is a species of sea lion native to the western coast of North America, ranging from Alaska to Mexico. It is also commonly known as the California sea lion. Additionally, the species goes by the names of the Pacific sea lion, West Coast sea lion, and the Galápagos sea lion - the latter of which is a subspecies found only on the Galápagos Islands. Despite different names, each variety of Zalophus californianus is recognizable for their bark-like vocalizations, long flippers, and distinctive "earflaps" on either side of their head. Their playful and social nature has made them a common sight in coastal marine parks and aquariums.
