Agouty, also known as paca or gibnut, is a small, herbivorous rodent found in tropical South and Central America. There are a few synonyms for the word agouty including aguti, acouchi, and cusuco. Other synonyms for the agouty include spotted cavy, lowland paca, and tepezcuintle. The agouty belongs to the family Dasyproctidae, which includes several species of guinea pig-like rodents. The agouty is known for its dark brown fur, white underbelly, and distinctive white spots on its body. It is a popular game animal and is also hunted for its meat and fur. Despite being hunted, the agouty is considered to be a Least Concern species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
