Anolis is a genus of lizards which are commonly referred to as anoles. These lizards are part of the family Dactyloidae and can be found in South and Central America as well as the Caribbean. There are over 400 species of anoles. Synonyms for the term anolis include; American Chameleons, American Ameivas, Salladers, Endinanternas and Lagartijas. The term anolis comes from the Greek word "anolis" which means "unable to fly". Despite this, many species of anoles are known to be excellent climbers and use their incredible agility to navigate branches and twigs in their natural habitats.
