Antonymous is a word which thankfully has several antonyms! These include synonyms, analogous, homologous, corresponding, comparable and cognate. Synonyms are perhaps the most familiar antonym, as they are frequently used in writing and speech to help clarify and amplify meaning. Analogous, homologous, and corresponding are all similar concepts, expressing the idea that there are similarities between two different things or concepts. Comparable and cognate are also useful antonyms for antonymous, as they indicate that something is similar or related to something else, but not exactly the same. All of these antonyms for antonymous serve to remind us of the complex ways in which language functions to communicate meaning.
