An Apollo asteroid is a type of Near Earth Object (NEO) that has an orbit that crosses Earth's orbit. These asteroids are classified as potentially hazardous because they have a chance of colliding with our planet. There are several synonyms for Apollo asteroids including Earth-crossing asteroids, Earth-grazing asteroids, and Earth-approaching asteroids. Another term used is simply "Apollo objects". These asteroids are named after the first asteroid of this type, which was discovered in 1932 and named after the Greek god of the sun Apollo. Today, researchers continue to monitor Apollo asteroids and work to develop strategies to mitigate the potential threat they pose to Earth.
