The Araucaria family comprises a group of trees that belong to the ancient and diverse conifer family. The trees are commonly known as "monkey puzzle trees" because their unusual branch patterns make it difficult for monkeys to climb them. The Araucaria family consists of several species that have been grouped together based on their physical characteristics, growth habits, and geographic distribution. Other synonyms for this family include the "pine family" and "Coniferae family." While there are only a few dozen species of Araucarias, many of them are important commercial timber trees in their native South America, Australia, and parts of Asia.
