Barking deer, also known as Muntjac deer and Indian muntjac, is a small deer species found in several parts of Asia. Its name originates from its distinct vocalization, which sounds like a bark. There are other names used for this species, such as red muntjac, southern muntjac, and rib-faced deer. In Thailand, it is known as Kanchil, while in Cambodia, it is called Khting Vor. In China, it is known as Sijia and Gong-sun, while in Vietnam, it is called Trai and Sau-lai. In Indonesia, it is called Kakas and Cantil. Although the barking deer is a small creature, it has gained importance throughout Asia as a game animal and has become a valuable resource for food and traditional medicine.
