Basenji, also known as the African Barkless Dog, is a unique breed of hound that originated in Central Africa. There are different synonyms which describe Basenji such as "Congo Dog" due to its origin from Central Africa, "M'bwa M'kube M'gugmu" which means "jumping up and down dog" in Swahili and refers to their playful nature. Another common synonym for the Basenji is "barkless dog" as they make a yodel-like sound instead of a traditional bark. Moreover, due to their intelligence and independence, they are often associated with the synonym, "cat-like" behavior. Lastly, the term "poodle of the jungle" is also used to refer to the Basenji breed due to their grooming habits.
