Basidiomycotina, also known as Basidiomycetes, is a group of fungi that includes many familiar species such as mushrooms, rusts, and smuts. This name is derived from the characteristic basidium, a specialized cell that produces and releases spores. While Basidiomycotina is the most commonly used scientific name for this group, it also has several synonyms that have been used interchangeably over the years. Some of these synonyms include Hymenomycetes, Gasteromycetes, and Phragmobasidiomycetes. Each of these names reflects a particular feature or trait of this diverse group of fungi, but ultimately they all refer to the same taxonomic group.
