Battle fatigue is a term commonly used to describe a state of extreme exhaustion, stress, and emotional trauma experienced by soldiers who have been exposed to prolonged combat. Synonyms for battle fatigue include combat stress, combat-related stress, shell shock, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and war fatigue. PTSD is a severe psychological condition that can lead to symptoms such as nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Shell shock, a term used during World War I, has since been replaced by PTSD as a medical diagnosis. Combat-related stress, combat stress, and war fatigue are less severe terms that describe the same condition.
