Beer potomania is a serious medical condition caused by chronic alcohol consumption that results in severe electrolyte imbalances. It can lead to neurological deficits, seizures, and in extreme cases, coma or death. Synonyms for beer potomania include alcoholic ketoacidosis and malnutrition-associated with chronic alcohol abuse. Additional similar terms include alcohol-related encephalopathy and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Each of these terms refers to the various medical complications that can arise from prolonged alcohol use. While some of these conditions can be managed with treatment, the only sure way to prevent them is to avoid excessive alcohol consumption altogether.
