The name of the country has undergone several changes over the years. During the Soviet era, it was known as Byelorussia, which translates to "White Russia" in English. Another synonym for Belorussia is the Republic of Belarus. The country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and has since been known by this name. Some people also refer to Belarus as "The Country of Blue Lakes" due to the numerous lakes that are found across the country.
