The black cherry tree, scientifically known as Prunus serotina, is a majestic and enigmatic species found in regions across the globe. It is renowned for its dark bark, glossy green foliage and the small, sweet black cherries borne in abundance from late summer through early autumn. Some synonyms for the black cherry tree include wild cherry, rum cherry, chokecherry, mountain black cherry and bird cherry. Interestingly, despite its name, the black cherry tree does not only produce black cherries; the fruit can range in color from deep red to almost black, depending on the variety and ripeness.
