Caesaropapism refers to a political system where the ruler has absolute power in both secular and religious spheres. Synonyms for this term include despotism, autocracy, and absolute monarchy. Other words that can be used to describe this concept include theocracy, wherein religious leaders hold all political power; authoritarianism, wherein the state uses violent means to maintain control; and totalitarianism, wherein the state controls all aspects of society including religion. These words are often used interchangeably, but each has its nuances and connotations. Regardless of the terminology, all these systems represent a concentration of power in a single entity with little or no checks and balances on their authority.
