Cannulize is a term used in medical jargon to refer to a process of inserting a cannula or a thin tube into a body cavity, duct or vessel to enable drainage or access for medical treatment. However, there are several other synonyms used for this term such as intubation, catheterization, injection, infusion, and tracheotomy. These words refer to a similar process of providing access into a body part in different contexts. For instance, intubation refers to the placement of a tube through the mouth into the trachea to support breathing. Catheterization, on the other hand, refers to insertion of a catheter to drain urine or other fluids from the body. Infusion and injection both refer to the process of introducing fluids or medication through a vein or artery. Tracheotomy is a medical procedure used to create an opening in the windpipe to facilitate breathing.
