The celestial pole is an imaginary point in the sky around which the stars seem to rotate. It refers to one of two points, namely the North or South pole, depending on the hemisphere the observer is in. Some synonyms for celestial pole are zenith, nadir, equatorial poles, and polar axis. The zenith is a point directly overhead the observer and is the opposite of the nadir, which is directly below him. The equatorial poles are the two points where the Earth's equator intersects with its celestial sphere. The polar axis is an imaginary line from the Earth's North to South pole, passing through its center, around which the Earth rotates.
