Chiari Malformation is a condition where the brain tissue extends into the spinal canal. Though there are no direct synonyms for the term Chiari Malformation, there are related medical terms that can be used interchangeably with it, such as cerebellar tonsillar ectopia, tonsillar herniation, and Arnold-Chiari malformation. The name "Arnold-Chiari" comes from the doctors who first described it, and it has two subtypes; type 1 shows symptoms in adulthood while type 2 is present at birth and can lead to severe neurological problems. Some other medical terms related to Chiari Malformation are craniocervical junction abnormalities, syringomyelia, and spinal cord compression.
