A chief petty officer (CPO) is a rank in the United States Navy that is higher than a petty officer but lower than a commissioned officer. Synonyms for CPO include senior petty officer, top non-commissioned officer, master chief petty officer, first class petty officer, and chief warrant officer. In other branches of the military, different terms are used to describe the equivalent rank. In the United States Coast Guard, a CPO is referred to as a senior chief petty officer, while in the United States Marine Corps, the rank is called a gunnery sergeant. Regardless of the term used, a chief petty officer is a respected and experienced leader in the military community.
