Citellus Lateralis is a species of ground squirrel commonly found in the western United States. This small mammal is also known by a few other names, including the golden-mantled ground squirrel, golden-mantled chipmunk, and creek squirrel. As its name implies, the squirrel has distinct golden coloration on its back and flanks. It is often mistaken for a chipmunk due to its size and coloration. Citellus Lateralis is known for its ability to hibernate for up to nine months of the year, surviving on stored body fat. It is an important prey species for many predators, including hawks, snakes, coyotes, and foxes.
