Columbium, a chemical element with the symbol Cb, is also known as niobium. Niobium is a rare, gray, ductile, and highly reactive metal that is commonly used in the steel and aerospace industries. Other synonyms for the word columbium include Nb, niobium metallicum, and element 41. This element was discovered in 1801 by an English chemist named Charles Hatchett and was named columbium in honor of Christopher Columbus. However, in 1949, the name was officially changed to niobium by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Despite the name change, the term columbium can still be found in some scientific literature.
