The common scoter is a species of sea duck that typically breeds in the boreal forests of northern Eurasia. They are also known by several different synonyms, including the black scoter, American scoter, and velvet scoter. These birds are easily recognized by their black plumage and bright yellow eyes, and are often seen in large flocks along the coastlines of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Although they are not considered endangered, common scoters are sometimes hunted for their meat and feathers, and are also vulnerable to habitat loss and pollution. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these remarkable seabirds and their habitats around the world.
