Compact Disc Recordable is commonly referred to as CD-R. It is a type of optical disc that can be written only once by a CD-R burner. Synonyms for the term "CD-R" include Recordable Compact Disc, Write-Once Compact Disc, Blank Compact Disc, and Writable Compact Disc. Other common types of optical discs that serve similar purposes to CD-R include CD-RW (Compact Disc ReWritable) which can be written, erased and rewritten multiple times, and DVD-R (Digital Versatile Disc Recordable) which uses similar technology to CD-R, but can store much more data. In recent years, CD-Rs have been largely replaced by digital storage solutions such as USB drives and cloud storage.
