Congenital syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that affects newborns. It occurs when a pregnant woman with syphilis passes the infection to her baby during pregnancy or delivery. Other synonymous terms for congenital syphilis include inherited syphilis, fetal syphilis, and congenital lues. Inherited syphilis refers to the transmission of the disease from the infected mother to the unborn child. Fetal syphilis specifically refers to the infection of the fetus during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Congenital lues is another term for the disease. It is mainly used in medical literature and research studies. Regardless of the term used, all of them describe the same condition.
