Congenital pancytopenia, also known as severe congenital neutropenia, is a rare genetic condition characterized by low white blood cell counts and a weakened immune system. While there are no synonyms for this specific term, it is often grouped with other conditions under the umbrella term of "bone marrow failure syndromes". Some of these syndromes include Fanconi anemia, Diamond-Blackfan anemia, and aplastic anemia. Each of these conditions has unique symptoms and specific genetic mutations that cause them, but they all share the common feature of bone marrow failure. Research into these syndromes is ongoing, and new treatments are being developed to improve prognosis and quality of life for those affected.
