Cord blood is a valuable source of stem cells found in a newborn baby's umbilical cord. Several synonyms exist that refer to the blood collected from the umbilical cord after childbirth, including placental blood, umbilical cord plasma, and umbilical cord blood. Other terms include PBSC (peripheral blood stem cells), HSC (hematopoietic stem cells), and bone marrow transplant. The stem cells found in cord blood have immense potential for use in treating a variety of disorders and diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma, and certain genetic disorders. As a result, cord blood banks have been established worldwide to store and preserve cord blood, allowing for the future use of this critical resource in medical treatments.
