Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive tract. It is named after American gastroenterologist Burrill B. Crohn. However, some synonyms for the word "Crohn" are ileitis, regional enteritis, and granulomatous colitis. Ileitis refers to inflammation that occurs in the ileum or the last part of the small intestine. Regional enteritis is a term that describes inflammation that happens in any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. Lastly, granulomatous colitis is another term that describes chronic inflammation of the colon, which is characterized by the formation of granulomas. Regardless of which term is used, the symptoms and treatments remain the same for Crohn's disease.
