Cryptobiosis, the state of reversible metabolic suspension, has a limited number of synonyms. Anhydrobiosis shares this quality, where organisms can survive without water, through dehydration. Tardigrade, which comes from the phylum Tardigrada, is also a similar term. This phylum includes small aquatic animals capable of withstanding extreme temperatures and radiations. Likewise, anoxibiosis refers to an organism's ability to tolerate a lack of oxygen, while hibernation is used to describe the temporary slowing down of metabolic activity by an animal. Lastly, quiescence, which means suspended inactivity or dormancy, can also be used to describe the state of cryptobiosis. Although the terms above are slightly different, they all relate to the ability of organisms to survive in extreme environments by going into a state of energy-saving rest.
