Ectopic kidney is a condition in which the kidney is positioned abnormally outside its usual location in the pelvis. Synonyms for this condition include renal ectopia, misplaced kidney, malpositioned kidney, aberrant kidney, or displaced kidney. These terms are often used interchangeably in medical literature to refer to a kidney that is located higher or lower than its normal position, or on the opposite side of the body from where it is expected. Ectopic kidney can be a rare anatomical variation, which is usually asymptomatic and does not require treatment. However, it may also be associated with other congenital abnormalities, such as urinary tract malformations, and may cause complications such as renal stones, hydronephrosis, or infection.
