Ectopistes Migratorius, commonly referred to as the Passenger Pigeon, was a migratory bird species that became extinct in the early 20th century. There are several synonymous names for this species, including Wild Pigeon, American Pigeon, and Wood Pigeon. The species was known for its vast flocks, numbering in the billions, that would darken the skies across North America during migration. Unfortunately, due to excessive hunting and habitat loss, the last known Passenger Pigeon died in captivity in 1914. Despite its tragic demise, the species continues to be studied and remembered as a cautionary tale of the impact humans can have on the environment.
