The epipteric bone, also known as the frontal interparietal bone, is a small plate-like structure found in the human skull. This bone is located near the sagittal suture, between the parietal and frontal bones. Synonyms for the epipteric bone include wormian bone or sutural bone. These terms are derived from Danish anatomist Ole Worm, who first described these additional cranial bones. Wormian bones are formed by the ossification of cranial sutures, primarily the lambdoid suture. Although small and often inconspicuous, these bones hold great significance in forensic science, as they can aid in age estimation and the identification of skeletal remains.
