Epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a condition in which a thin layer of scar tissue forms on the surface of the retina, causing vision distortion. Another term for ERM is macular pucker, which is a more generally recognized term. However, other synonyms also exist, including cellophane maculopathy, premacular fibrosis, and surface wrinkling retinopathy. ERM can also be referred to as a vitreomacular traction syndrome, which is a more specific descriptor of the mechanism responsible for causing ERM. Regardless of the terminology used, ERM is a treatable condition that can cause significant visual impairment, especially if left untreated for an extended period.
