Erignathus is a genus of two species of seals found in the Arctic regions. The common name for these seals is the bearded seal, but there are several other synonyms for the word "erignathus." One of the most well-known synonyms is "squareflipper" due to the square shape of the flippers of this species. Another synonym for erignathus is "hairy seal" as this species has a thick coat of fur and long whiskers. Some other lesser-known synonyms include "marbled seal," "ringed seal," and "ice seal." Despite these various synonyms, the scientific name erignathus remains the most commonly used term for this genus.
