The European aurochs, also known as bos primigenius, was a type of wild cattle that lived across Europe, Asia, and North Africa during the last Ice Age. This extinct species has numerous synonyms in different languages and cultures. In Latin, it is known as urus, while in Russian, it is called tur. The German synonym for aurochs is Auerochse, and in Polish, it is called żubr. The French and Spanish names for aurochs are auroque and uro, respectively. In different regions of Europe, the animal also had various related names, such as bucranium, which referred to the skull of the animal. Despite being extinct, the European aurochs remains a popular subject in art, literature, and mythology.
