The external transcribed spacer (ETS) is a DNA segment found between the small subunit and large subunit of the ribosomal RNA genes. There are various synonyms for the ETS region based on its location and function in different organisms. In plants, it is referred to as the intergenic spacer (IGS) or non-transcribed spacer (NTS). In animals, it is known as the non-transcribed spacer (NTS) or intergenic spacer (IGS). In fungi, it is called the intergenic spacer region (IGS) or non-transcribed spacer (NTS). Apart from these synonyms, specific names for the ETS region exist for certain species, such as the 18S-5.8S-28S region in humans.
