Family Ammodytidae, commonly known as sand lances, refer to a group of small, elongated fish found in shallow ocean waters. These fish are an important source of food for birds, marine mammals and larger predatory fish. Some synonyms used for this family include sand eels, needlefish, and launce. The sand eels are primarily associated with sandy bottoms. They bury themselves in the sand with only their eyes and mouths showing and feed on planktonic creatures that drift by in the water column. Needlefish is a term typically used to describe slender fish with a long beak-like snout. These synonyms are used interchangeably with the term Family Ammodytidae in scientific and popular literature alike.
