The Family Lymantriidae is a group of moths also known by a variety of common names. Some of these synonyms include tussock moths, ermine moths, and vaporer moths. The term "tussock" refers to the bushy projections found on many species of this family's caterpillars, while "ermine" refers to the white and furry appearance of some adults. "Vaporer" is a reference to the male's tendency to fly in a jerky fashion, resembling the motion of a small airplane. Despite these various names, all members of the Lymantriidae family share certain traits, including hairy bodies, brush-like antennae, and a distinctive way of holding their wings when at rest.
