Family Marchantiaceae is a group of liverworts that belong to the division Marchantiophyta. Often known as the Marchantia family, it comprises over 30 genera, including Asterella, Lunularia, and Tylimanthus. Members of this family have a simple thallus and bear umbrella-shaped structures called gemmae cups that contain asexual reproductive structures called gemmae. They are commonly found in moist habitats like swamps, bogs, and wetlands. While the Marchantiaceae family is the most commonly used name for this group of liverworts, other synonyms include the Marchantiidae, Marchantiales, and Marchantianae, among others. These terms may be used interchangeably to refer to the same family of liverworts.
