The family Ochnaceae belongs to the order Malpighiales and comprises around 500 species of trees, shrubs, and herbs. It is primarily found in tropical regions and is known for its beautiful flowers and fruits. The family includes various synonyms such as Indosinia, Sarcostigma, Brackenridgea, Campylospermum, and Luxemburgia, among others. One of the most popular species in this family is Ochna serrulata, commonly known as the Mickey Mouse plant because of its striking black berries with bright red seeds, resembling the ears, buttons, and shorts of the popular cartoon character. Ochnaceae plants are often used for medicinal purposes and have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
