The family Tetragoniaceae is commonly known as the spinach family, due to the spinach-like appearance of some species. Other synonyms for this family include the New Zealand spinach family, and the ice plant family, the latter referring to its ability to withstand freezing temperatures. The plants in this family are mostly succulent, with fleshy leaves and stems to store water in dry conditions. They are found across the Southern Hemisphere, with a particularly high diversity in Australia and New Zealand. Some members of this family, such as the beach spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides) and the New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa), are edible and commonly used as leafy vegetables.
