Fertilization membrane, a term used in reproductive biology to describe the outer membrane that forms around the egg following fertilization, can also be referred to as the zona pellucida. The zona pellucida is an extracellular matrix composed of glycoproteins that surrounds the mammalian oocyte. In some species, particularly fish and amphibians, the fertilization membrane is known as the vitelline envelope. In insects, the membrane is known as the chorion. Generally speaking, these terms all refer to the protective layer that forms around the egg during fertilization, preventing multiple sperm from fertilizing the same egg and protecting the developing embryo from potential harm.
