Five Nations is a term historically used to refer to the powerful Iroquois Confederacy of Indigenous peoples in North America. Also known as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the member nations were the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. Today, the term Five Nations is largely considered outdated as it oversimplifies the complex histories and deep cultural differences among these nations. Instead, contemporary terms like Haudenosaunee Confederacy or Iroquois Confederacy are more appropriate and respectful of the diverse peoples and nations within the confederacy. Other synonyms for Five Nations include The League of Five Nations and The Iroquois League.
