A "flat file" is a simple database format in which data is stored in text files with fixed field lengths. A fixed width file is similar to a flat file in that data is stored in a fixed-length format, but the data fields are separated by spaces or other delimiters instead of being fully enclosed in quotation marks. A delimited file uses delimiters such as commas, tabs, or semicolons to separate data fields.
