Foehn is a warm and dry wind that usually occurs on the leeward side of mountains. This phenomenon is widely known in the Alps but has different names and synonyms in other regions worldwide. The foehn is also known as the Chinook wind in North America, the Zonda wind in the Andes, the Nor'wester in New Zealand, and the Santa Ana wind in southern California. In Japan, it is called the Goraiko, while in Greece, it's referred to as the Vardaris. In Turkey, it is called the Poyraz, while in Bulgaria, it is known as the Kosava.
