The fossa cat, also known as the Cryptoprocta ferox, is a species of carnivorous mammal found only on the island of Madagascar. While some may refer to it simply as the "fossa," there are numerous synonyms for this elusive creature. These include the Malagasy names "kalakonja," "kidoky," and "tamba," as well as the French term "cou-rat" and the English translation of "cat-like." Despite its name, the fossa cat is actually more closely related to the mongoose than to felines, but its sleek body and sharp claws certainly give it a feline appearance.
