Genus Cyon also known as the African wild dog is a unique canid species known for its social nature and incredibly difficult conservation status. These canids are found in various habitats and territories throughout sub-Saharan Africa. They are also referred to as painted dogs, hunting dogs, and Cape hunting dogs, the latter coming from their appearance in that region of Africa. Due to their dwindling population and conservation efforts, the African wild dog has been assigned the name Lycaon pictus, with "pictus" translating in Latin as painted. While they may have various names, the unique characteristics of the African wild dog remain the same.
