Genus Hypopitys belongs to the family Monotropaceae and is commonly known as pinesap or false beechdrops. It has a few synonyms such as Hypopitys americana, Hypopitys lanuginosa, Monotropa hypopitys, and Pityophthorus hypopitys. The plant is found in North America, Europe, and Asia, and grows in a mycoheterotrophic relationship with fungi. Genus Hypopitys is an interesting species as it does not contain chlorophyll and cannot produce its own food. Instead, it obtains its nutrients through a unique relationship with fungi, which in turn get their nutrients from the roots of trees. The flowers of the plant have a bell-shaped white or pink corolla and the fruit is a capsule containing numerous small seeds.
