Genus Mya is a group of bivalve mollusks commonly known as softshell clams. Other synonymous common names for Genus Mya include steamers, longnecks, Ipswich clams or Gapers. They are popular among seafood lovers for their sweet, delicate taste and tender texture. Softshell clams are harvested from the wild, mainly in the coastal regions of North America, and are also farmed. The genus is characterized by two divided siphons and the presence of a horny, elongated oval-shaped foot. While Genus Mya comprises a single genus and currently includes seven extant species, its common names reflect the regional and cultural diversity of its distribution range.
