Genus Pteropogon is a term used in biology to refer to a group of fish commonly known as silver scats or scat fish. There are several synonyms that are used to describe this genus including Scatophagus, and Argus. Scatophagus argus and Scatophagus tetracanthus are two of the most common species within the genus. The silver scat is a popular aquarium fish largely due to its attractive appearance and peaceful behavior. Native to Southeast Asian countries, these fish thrive in freshwater and brackish waters. They are popularly kept as pets because they are not aggressive, can grow up to 12 inches long, and are able to interact well with other species of fish.
